There are three indian tribes in Texas.  They are:

  • Alabama-Coushatta Reservation
  • Tigua Reservation
  • Kickapoo Reservation

The interaction between the Europeans and these Indian tribes started in the early 1500’s.  It is safe to imagine that European genes were spread during these encounters.  It was the French intervention in Texas in the early late 1600’s that forced Spain to attempt to populate Texas.  In the early 1700’s Spain made feeble attempts at populating South Texas with Spaniards and Mestizos.  Unable to produce enough Spaniards or Mestizos, Spain made the fatal flaw of inviting Americans to settle Texas.  There was no peaceful coexistence in Texas.  Both attempts to settle Texas did not bode well with the native Indian tribes who resented the foreign incursion into their land and attempted to drive out the intruders.

It is in this sparse interaction between the Native Indians and everybody else that the Tejano is born.  From this early beginning to today, the Tejano is a fusion of every ethnic group that has ever traversed through Texas.  Just like the Indian before him had been eradicated from the Tejano landscape, the Tejano met a similar fate with the northern migration of the Mexicano around 1910.  From the Mexicano we get the cultural values of the Espanol-Mexicano-Indio.  Today, in Texas, we have thriving Tejano-Mexicano and White Anglo-Saxon Protestant (WASP) cultures.  Everyone regardless of ethnicity is a part of the Tejano-Mexicano culture or the WASP culture, or perhaps both.

Quien Somos?  Somos la cultura que vivimos.  Our culture identifies who we are. To understand who we are we must look at how we got here from a historical perspective.  We all know who was here first.  Here is a list”
